UC Merced ranks among leading North American institutions with an upper-campus waste-diversion rate of 80 percent in 2016. The university is continually expanding its efforts to reduce waste and foster innovative solutions.
Sustainability Innovations
- The Dining Commons features the Ozzi initiative, which replaces throwaway food containers with reusable containers made out of recycled yogurt cups.
- The university offers compostable utensils in the Dining Commons, and discounts for drinks with the use of reusable mugs/cups at the Lantern Café.
- UC Merced implemented a Waste Sorting Line that incorporates a group of 16 students, all of whom collect, recycle and compost landfill waste.
