Recycling and Waste

UC Merced champions its Triple Zero commitment, which includes producing zero net waste by 2020. By minimizing waste, UC Merced protects natural resources, saves energy, reduces waste and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

UC Merced ranks among leading North American institutions with an upper-campus waste-diversion rate of 80 percent in 2016. The university is continually expanding its efforts to reduce waste and foster innovative solutions.

Sustainability Innovations

  • The Dining Commons features the Ozzi initiative, which replaces throwaway food containers with reusable containers made out of recycled yogurt cups.
  • The university offers compostable utensils in the Dining Commons, and discounts for drinks with the use of reusable mugs/cups at the Lantern Café.
  • UC Merced implemented a Waste Sorting Line that incorporates a group of 16 students, all of whom collect, recycle and compost landfill waste.
