UC Merced was built to be water-efficient but has actively pursued even more stringent water conservation efforts in response to the ongoing drought.
For example, irrigation modifications have been made to increase water efficiency.
All campus buildings have potable-water metering and collect data that can be analyzed to increase efficiency further. A bar-code scanning system allows building users to instantly report leaks using their smartphones. But those are just a few of the ways the campus conserves.
Efforts have been so effective, that even though UC Merced constructed all of its buildings to be 40 percent more efficient than state requirements, it has been able to trim another 23 percent of its water consumption from the baseline year of 2013 — despite the addition of two new buildings and 1,000 more students.
